2022 National Health Information Awards Judges

We would like to thank our 2022 judges for their time and expertise in reviewing this year’s entries. Please note: Judges were not permitted to review any entries submitted by their organizations.

Thomas Andrews, RN/BC, MS was born and raised in northern Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois college of nursing with his bachelors degree in nursing. Working at the University of Illinois Hospital for 10 years he was an early adopter of clinical informatics and the use of electronic medical records.

Julie Bradford, MA, is the associate director of Patient Education at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. With 26 years of experience in the health care industry and 20 years in management, she oversees institutional or center specific programs for patient education. She creates multimedia content and design for patient education programs, continuously works to improve the health literacy and health numeracy standards, and implements patient education style standards and guidelines. She received a B.S. degree in journalism from Texas A&M University and a M.A. degree in health education from Sam Houston State University. Prior to her current position, she has experience in public relations, communications and marketing in a community hospital setting and has worked in the community health field.

Kimberlie Cerrone, Founder/CEO, Tiatros, Inc.

Susan Cottman is the Executive Editor for Wellness publications in the Ebix Benefits Administration and Wellness, a unit of Ebix, Inc. Titles include health letters: Personal Best Healthlines, Hope Health, Top Health and Body Bulletin Canada as well as Year of Good Health U.S. and Canada wall calendars. Her specialties include Canadian products, custom calendars and low-literacy publications. She has been with Ebix since 1999.

Jeni Cross is a Consumer Insights Advisor with CareSource.

Roberta Larson Duyff, MS, RDN, FAND, FADA, is a nationally recognized food, nutrition, and wellness writer, media spokesperson, national speaker, and consultant, communicating the “power of positive nutrition” with practical, evidence-based, and great-tasting ways to eat for health. Translating sound science into consumer-friendly food, nutrition, and health communications, she has authored healthy eating books for the public, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Complete Food & Nutrition Guide, recognized as “Best of Show” among all 2018 Gold National Health Information Awards. For children, secondary schools, and universities, her publications focus on food, nutrition, and health and on cultural awareness, knowledge, and competence.

Jane Frank, MPH, MCHES, is a Senior Health Education Specialist working in Patient Education at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. With more than 30 years of experience, she oversees patient education programs for disease site specific clinics. She has a B.S. degree in psychology from the University of Houston and an M.P.H. degree in health education from the University of Texas School of Public Health. In 2014, she earned her certification as a master’s level prepared health education specialist. Her background includes public health, health literacy, cancer education, awareness and outreach and non-profit initiatives and efforts. Prior to MD Anderson, she worked for the American Cancer Society in Houston for 11 years.

Margaret Gowan Mester works as a managing editor for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She has a Bachelor's degree in journalism and a Master's degree from Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa) in journalism and corporate communications with an emphasis on integrated communications. Margaret has 25-plus years of experience and has won nearly 30 regional and national awards, including more than 20 National Health Information Awards. She's a card-toting member of the Oxford Comma Club. And she loves to write behavior-motivation teen content so she can use her favorite punctuation, the exclamation mark!

Emily Heller Belmonte is the Founder and Creative Chief of Pangaea Creative House, an award-winning creative media agency whose philosophy is to elevate the conversation about health to one that’s motivating, inspiring, and above all, thought-provoking. With more than 25 years experience at top advertising and marketing agencies, Emily believes in thinking outside the box when it comes to clients like Sanofi, Amarin, Reckitt Brands, Pfizer, Merck, Genentech, and Exam Med Tele Health.
Betsy Hornick, MS, RDN, Director, Practice Publications at Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Sarah Hock joined Christiana Care Quality Partners ACO, LLC which does business as eBrightHealth ACO in November 2017. In her current role as a Program Manager, she works collaboratively with the ACO Management Team as well as multi-disciplinary teams to perform and support ACO Operations. Sarah received a bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Delaware and a masters degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Healthcare Administration from Wilmington University.

Tom McPheron, Manager, PR and Communications at American Academy of Pediatrics.

Cheryl Miller is the Provincial Program Manager for the Enhancing Care for Ontario Care Partners program at Sinai Health in Toronto, Ontario. Cheryl’s career spans public, private and not-for-profit sectors in Canada and the US and includes health planning, database consulting, technology project management and health program management. Cheryl has a solid track record of successfully managing people, processes and programs through transformative change from vision to individual, family and/or community health impact. She is most often found to be inspiring and leading responsive, client-centred and sustainable change that significantly impacts the health and well-being of older adults and their families.

Emily Paulsen, Editorial Consultant/Editor/Writer, EAP Communications, LLC.

Don R. Powell, Ph.D., is the Founder, President and CEO of the American Institute for Preventive Medicine located in Farmington Hills, Michigan. For 39 years the Institute has been a leading developer and provider of well-being programs for companies, health organizations, unions, and government agencies. Dr. Powell received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan where he also taught in the Psychology Department. He has presented at over 250 professional conferences and has received numerous awards for his work, including the Hog Ogden medal from the CDC, the Distinguished Leadership and Service Award from the Association for Worksite Health Promotion, and the U.S Government's Director's Award for Innovative Public Health Contributions.

Lily Ren, Staff Vice President, Centene Corporation.

Emily Rosenbaum is a writer and editor at the American Academy of Pediatrics. Prior to that, she worked at the Chicago Tribune for 20 years.

Ann Smith, Vice President, Health Group, Coyne PR.

Gina Steiner, MS is Director of Communications for the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. She has directed the communications programs for American Academy of Pediatrics, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. In these roles, she has served on various governmental task forces dedicated to health and safety. She also has served as a journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times Group and Thomson Reuters. As a health communications consultant, she's created campaigns and materials for various clients, including AbbVie and the Health Information Resource Center. She has a Master of Science in Health Communication from the University of Illinois.

Ela Vashishtha is a strategic and passionate healthcare consultant with over five years of experience in business planning, public health, and organizational effectiveness. She has helped hospitals, physician clinics, digital products and ambulatory surgery centers to be quality focused and cost effective. She has a Master's degree in Health Administration, is six-sigma certified, and loves to work on social causes, specifically poverty, education, and health.
